Leo Strauss is considered to be one of the most profound thinkers of the 20th century. His method of meticulous reading and interpretation of classical texts constituted an important development in 20th-century hermeneutics. His entire political philosophy is devoted to examining the overall progress of Western civilization, emphasizing the reopening of the disputes between the ancients and the moderns, and thus reviewing various trends of contemporary thought. His representative works include "Persecution and the Art of Writing," "City and Man," and "What Is Political Philosophy."

Editor Ronna Burger is a professor of philosophy and the Sizeler Professor of Jewish Philosophy at Tulane University in Louisiana. She is also the author of "Aristotles Dialogue with Socrates: On the Nicomachean Ethics" (University of Chicago Press, 2008) and has written on various ancient philosophical works.

Translator He Bochao is an associate researcher at the Philosophy Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
