In China, there is a continually growing number of Internet users, which has reached 5.13 billion. This book examines the various purposes for which people use the Internet and investigates how these users are transformed into publics through the utilization of technology within the context of a network society. The book raises questions about how people, who are mediated by new ICTs, come together to form new social categories. It further explores how publics are formed in a society that follows the logic of the network - with particular emphasis on how fans become publics. Through the use of online surveys and in-depth interviews, this book provides a detailed account of the process of constructing a new social formation in contemporary China.
