Over the course of Donald Trump’s presidency, the unthinkable question has arisen: is our democracy at risk? After years of studying the breakdown of democracies in Europe and Latin America, Harvard professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt believe the answer is yes. Rather than ending abruptly in a revolution or military coup, democracies now tend to weaken gradually through the erosion of critical institutions such as the judiciary and press, as well as the erosion of political norms. While there are potential exit ramps on the road to authoritarianism, electing Trump means the first ramp has already been passed.
By drawing upon extensive research and examples from historical and global contexts covering the years between 1930s Europe to contemporary countries such as Hungary, Turkey, and Venezuela - as well as even the American South during Jim Crow - Levitsky and Ziblatt provide a detailed analysis of how democracies die, while simultaneously presenting potential solutions for saving our own.
