Love, Loss and the Last Bear in the Clash of Nature and Humans

"The Last Bear" by Hannah Gold explores themes of love and loss, as well as the relationship between humans and nature. The plot follows 11-year-old April, a bold and knowledgeable girl who lost her mother at a young age. Her workaholic scientist father, who has not remarried, takes her with him to Bear Island in the Arctic Circle for six months of research. He hopes that what his daughter learns during their time on the island will be more valuable than six years of schooling.

At the start of the book, the researcher informs them that Bear Island does not have any bears, but on their first day, April sees a polar bear. The story will focus on Aprils relationship with the bear and the challenges they face.
