I Have Some Questions For You ★★
As Bodie Kane watched the familiar forest scenery pass by outside the car window, she couldnt help but recall Thalia Keith - the girl who forever remained 17 in her memory.
In 1995, the senior Thalia Keiths body was found floating in the swimming pool of Granby School. Everything that had previously made her so attractive and impressive - her wealthy family, her beauty, her talent, and her popularity in the tiny society of Granby - now turned her tragic death into a public spectacle. After a hasty and chaotic investigation, the police arrested and convicted Granby Schools athletic trainer, Omar Evans. This outcome was supposed to bring closure to the case, but due to flaws in the investigative process and the evidence, Thalia Keiths case remained an unsolved mystery and an ongoing contentious topic for many.
For years, Bodie tried to distance herself from Thalias death. After all, she had successfully distanced herself from all the other shadows of her past and transformed into a better version of herself. But somehow she couldnt let Thalia go: she wanted to know what really happened - she needed to know what really happened to Thalia Keith, after that "Camelot" opening night in 1995.
So, when one of her students from the podcast course proposed to explore Thalia Keiths case as her project, Bodie tried her best to suppress the thrill and eagerness: Maybe this time, someone would ask the right question, and she would finally remember the missing piece...
"I have some questions for you."
Are you ready for the truth?
-----
I was disappointed with I Have Some Questions For You. It read like a random diary of narrator Bodie Kane, rambling on and on aimlessly. Specifically, the book was purportedly about the tragedy of Thalia Keith, but shockingly took hundreds of pages to not concentrate on any coherent point. Although the author Rebecca Makkais writing style was fine, it wasnt good enough to save the fragmented and disordered plot.
As I read it, I couldnt help feeling that it was a waste of time. The Thalia Keith case just didnt make any sense, and as the protagonist supposed to unravel all the complex clues and probably uncover the hidden truth, Bodie ended up doing the exact opposite. She jumped between her past Granby days and her present life, commented on unverified rumors, such as about Thalia for no apparent reason, and imagined what happened to Thalia all those years ago. Everything got hopelessly mixed up, and theres no way to tell the difference between Bodies imaginations/speculations and what actually happened. As a result, Thalia Keiths case remained a mess and a clueless chase by the books end.
Would it be better if we disregarded the case and treated it purely as a story, maybe an unconventional coming-of-age tale since Bodie talked extensively about her experience growing up in Granby School? Unfortunately, it would still be a bad story, mainly because there were way too many things happening at once, and Bodie couldnt handle it. To be honest, I would prefer not to spend my time reading about a fictional character rambling on about her life and how all over the place it is.
All in all, there are some good ideas here, and I do like Makkais writing style. However, the story is messily written and strangely arranged, making it languorous and dull.
