Those old times, sometimes feel distant, as if separated by mountains, water, and endless time. Sometimes, however, they seem close, almost like yesterday, and one can still hear the words and smell the scents of the past. The things that are forever unforgettable in our lives may be intimate lovers, close friends, blood relatives, or just a sentence, a drink, or a momentary experience. Rediscovering memories, experiencing time, seeking warmth and beauty. "Letters from the Past" is a selection of works by Shen Congwen, specially released in honor of the 35th anniversary of his passing. It includes three parts of letters and articles: "Letters from the Journey to Xiangxi," "Notes from the Journey to Xiangxi," and "Reminiscences from Congwen." The book features 30 letters and articles, accompanied by 8 precious handwritten pieces by the author. Among them, "Notes from the Journey to Xiangxi" is a collection of letters written by Shen Congwen to Zhang Zhaohui during his journey home, describing what he saw and heard along the way and expressing his longing. Perhaps it is not commonly known that Shen Congwen was himself gentle and melancholy. Adrift on a boat, he leisurely pined for distant friends, the insights gained through his life multiplied in such moments. The part that I am most interested in is "Notes from the Journey to Xiangxi." Shen Congwen left his hometown early and was both familiar and unfamiliar with its affairs. Friends who wore otter skin hats might be vulgar but could also be elegant, wanton but could also be reserved... The Peach Blossom Spring was not the blooming paradise wed imagined, but the bamboo was good. The people and their customs were not all simple and natural, but carried a distinct trend of their times. There was also a friend who loved his nose so much, he believed from a young age that it would determine his destiny. But having thought too much about it, it might not have been that important. "Reminiscences from Congwen" is a tribute to Shen Congwens nostalgic feelings toward his hometown and the days of old. It bears witness to the precious memories deep within his heart. Shen Congwen was a son of Xiangxi and his words exude a scent of homesickness. No matter where he resided, his roots remained planted in his homeland. I always can hear the sound of flowing waters in his writings...
