"I have traveled all over the world, but in the end, I only have a special affection for Chengdu and am willing to spend my lifetime writing love letters to it. This is not only because of fate, but also because Chengdu suits me - an ordinary grassroots who lacks ambition but pursues progress, works hard and enjoys life, living life just right."
This is from the author Fan Xiongs book "Rongpiao Ji", a thick love letter he wrote to Chengdu over forty years. From a small county town to the big city of Chengdu, from a helpless and dependent upbringing to establishing himself, he shares his struggles, achievements, and the joys and sorrows of life and the city through his dedicated persistence.
This personal immigration story, recommended by authors Ala and Li Mingquan, comprehensively records the real-life experiences of the first generation of Chengdu drifters who have floated and rooted themselves over forty years since Reform and Opening up, earning it the nickname "Peoples World 1983-2023 Edition".
The first volume, "Drifting on the Journey", tells how the author, despite missing out on attending university, longed for Chengdu and overcame many difficulties, finally settling in the city with the help of a kind-hearted person.
The author says he likes Chengdu not just at first sight, but resists the seductions of other worldly pleasures, willingly staying loyal to the city for life.
The second volume, "Home in Chengdu," fulfills the promise of being "together", sharing memories of marriage, job hunting, entrepreneurship, raising children, and home life in Chengdu at every stage of the authors journey, including the good times, the painful reflections, and hopes for the future.
Throughout the book, the author reflects upon each stage of his life and presents many insights worth savoring, such as his remarks on his own success: "For millions of locals in Chengdu, they are born with it. Those who are financially able to attend high school and university are born with it. But it took me 10 years of my youth to earn it, and that is my fate."
He also shared his own struggles for success, waiting tirelessly and persistently, even if he was constantly rejected: "We had a lot of ideals, but the reality was bleak. All we could do was hold stubbornly and wait patiently."
He learned to endure and persevere, to use every detail of every step to pursue his dreams, always looking to make the most of the companys resources and even the bosss relationships.
After many years, he realized that rushing into investments out of impulse, often has several characteristics that lead to pitfalls: sudden opportunities that look too good to be true, a very "urgent" deadline that requires an immediate decision, and partners who cant come up with money "temporarily" and need him to front the costs.
Lastly, he reflects on the importance of communication between parents and their children, that status and money truly arent the most important things to pass on: "Its the daily communication with your child, regardless of how long it takes. Only then will your child grow up and let parents rest assured."
