In "I Studied on an Island," all of the great works mentioned have been added to my reading list. What particularly intrigued me was not just Yu Huas novels, but his essay "Music Influences My Writing." I had always thought of Yu Hua as only humorous and talented at writing, but now I see a whole new side of him.
From his book, its clear that classical music has permeated into his very being. Whenever he hears music, his bodys music DNA unconsciously reacts, marking him as an enthusiastic lover of music. Fans of classical music can read this book, and perhaps even engage in an intriguing talk with Yu Hua himself. For someone like me who only knows the basics, the reading can be a bit dry.
One sentence from the book left a deep impression on me. "Music is created from the heart, not the mind. The vastness of the heart is inexplicable, and its mission since time immemorial has always been to create and continuously create. It allows one thing to possess countless qualities. If one quality fades, all qualities vanish because they are the same." His degree of enthusiasm for music is evident. When I read this sentence, I can imagine his feelings of excitement, as I did when he put together a soccer field lineup for foreign writers in "I Studied on an Island."
Yu Hua Quotes: 1. "I often feel that life is constantly teasing me, winking at me, and leading me in a certain direction. I am a person who lacks determination in life, so every time I simply just follow along." 2. "Music allows me to feel the power of love instantly, like the heat of the sun and the coolness of moonlight, or like a storm that comes to my heart. Once again, I realize that a persons heart is always open, like the open land, willing to receive the brilliance of the sun and moon, willing to accept the wind and snow of all things that can reach it, and allow them to penetrate and digest." 3. "I understand that after the richness of narration reaches its peak, it is actually very pure, just like this great Passion, with nearly three hours of length, but only a few melodies. Quietness, brilliance, pain and joy repeat these simple melodies, as if using a short story structure and length to express the most enduring theme in literature." 4. "The melody flows with the light of the setting sun, not fiery but warm." 5. "His memories are endless, like the eagle circling overhead, with powerful claws stretching out to let him learn how to remember his own life in the remaining years." 6. "They died in an intense way, expressing a deep despair of reality, and their death became an enduring scream, echoing in their compatriots ears, urging them to stay awake and never go to sleep." 7. "Inspiration is like the stars in the night sky, plentiful and boundless, descending endlessly like the tireless tides, constantly beating against the rocky shore and the sandy beach." 8. "Dealing with a narrative concept is like treating a marriage, requiring deep thinking."
