Margaret Mitchell (1900-1949) was an American female writer. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in the southern United States. Her father was a lawyer and the former president of the Atlanta Historical Society. Mitchell attended Washington Seminary and Smith College in Massachusetts. Afterwards, she became a reporter for the local newspaper, the Atlanta Journal.
In 1925, Mitchell married John Marsh and quit her job as a reporter to concentrate on her writing. During the ten years that followed, she focused on creating her masterpiece, "Gone with the Wind". Upon its publication in 1936, the novel garnered a great deal of attention and success.
Mitchell's interest in American history, particularly in the South during the Civil War era, was heavily influenced by her family. She grew up in Atlanta and was exposed to local folklore and stories about the war and its aftermath. She also read extensively about the Civil War. The natural and social environment of the Southern United States in which she grew up provided the foundation and inspiration for Mitchell's writing.
