The story starts with the discovery of an eleven-year-old boy's violated corpse in a town park. All evidence, including eyewitnesses and fingerprints, points towards one of Flint City's most popular citizens - Terry Maitland. Maitland is a Little League coach, an English teacher, a husband, and a father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, who has a personal connection to Maitland as his son was once coached by him, orders a quick and very public arrest. Initially, Maitland provides an alibi, but as Anderson and the district attorney gather DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses, their case seems ironclad.
As the investigation progresses, horrifying answers begin to emerge, and King's thrilling story gains momentum, creating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Despite appearing to be a nice guy, the question arises: is Maitland wearing another face? When the revelation finally arrives, it will be a shock, but not one that Stephen King's readers aren't accustomed to.
