Yasuko Hanaoka, a divorced single mother, believed she had left her abusive ex-husband, Togashi, behind. However, Togashi resurfaces and threatens to harm both Yasuko and her teenage daughter, Misato, unless she gives him money. The situation quickly turns violent, resulting in Togashi's death on Yasuko's apartment floor. Yasuko's neighbor, Ishigami, a mathematics teacher, offers to help dispose of the body and together they plot a cover-up.
When the body is discovered and identified, Detective Kusanagi takes on the case, suspecting Yasuko of the murder. Despite Yasuko's seemingly solid alibi, Kusanagi remains suspicious. Seeking the expertise of Dr. Manabu Yukawa, a physicist and police consultant known as Professor Galileo, Kusanagi realizes that Ishigami, Yasuko's neighbor, might be involved. Yukawa, being a former college friend of Ishigami's, also suspects their neighbor.
A thrilling battle of wits ensues between Ishigami and Yukawa, with Ishigami using all his brainpower to outmaneuver Yukawa and protect Yasuko from being implicated in the murder.
