Humanity has successfully established colonies throughout the solar system, including Mars, the Moon, and the Asteroid Belt. However, the stars remain unattainable. Jim Holden serves as XO for an ice mining operation that transports goods between Saturn's rings and Belt mining stations. Their chance encounter with an abandoned vessel called The Scopuli unexpectedly grants them possession of a dangerous secret. Nevertheless, someone is willing to kill for it on an unprecedented scale. Jim and his crew must uncover who left the ship and why to prevent an impending war. In another part of the system, Detective Miller searches for a specific girl whose wealthy parents have initiated the search. He traces her trail to The Scopuli where he intercepts Holden, a rebel sympathizer, and suspects that this girl holds the answers to everything. Negotiating between Earth's government, Outer Planet insurgents, and clandestine businesses, Holden and Miller face improbable odds. But in the vast void of space, even a single ship can tip the scales and determine the fate of the universe.
