Theodore Finch has a fascination with death and often contemplates ways in which he could take his own life. However, every time he reaches this point, something good, no matter how small, stops him.

On the other hand, Violet Markey is driven by the future, eagerly counting down the days until graduation. She hopes this will allow her to leave behind her small town in Indiana and the agony she has experienced following her sister's recent death.

Their lives become intertwined when they meet on the ledge of their school's bell tower, and it's unclear who is responsible for saving whom. A project unites them, where they aim to explore the "natural wonders" of their state. This venture brings both Finch and Violet to some essential discoveries where they realize they can only be themselves around each other.

Finch realizes he can be a "weird, funny, live-out-loud guy" without being regarded as a freak, and Violet can now live her days instead of just counting them. Unfortunately, while Violet's world is expanding, Finch's is shrinking.

Overall, this intense and captivating novel is perfect for fans of Jay Asher, Rainbow Rowell, John Green, Gayle Forman, and Jenny Downham. Jennifer Niven has given voice to the young adult genre with her unique literary style.
