When Michael Connelly was in college, he studied architecture but hated it. One evening, he wandered over to the student union and watched the film adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel, "The Long Goodbye." Though Connelly had never read Chandler's book before, he fell in love with the movie and went to see it again the next day. Within a week, he had read all of Chandler's works. This was when Connelly knew his dream was to become a crime novelist like Chandler.
Connelly's writing career began as a journalist, and one report that he collaborated on with two other colleagues made it to the finalist list for the Pulitzer Prize. Because of this report, he came to Los Angeles, the stomping ground of Philip Marlowe, the protagonist in Chandler's novels.
