What is the significance of "Chinese ethnicity"? How did the rulers of modern China incorporate people and territories from the borderlands into the political structure of the country? Do the people of the borderlands exist as a "national" group or as individual "citizens" within the country, and how have they become the contemporary manifestation of the changing face of the modern Chinese borderlands step by step? This book is the result of the theme project "Culture, History, and Nation-building: The Constructing Process of Ethnic Boundaries and Minority Nationalities in Modern China" (2015-2017) at the Academia Sinica. The title of the book, "Hidden Populations," refers to the various cultural groups, hidden or revealed, within the unified political body and clear national borders, as well as some population groups that cross the border; their interaction has affected the complex process of modern "nation-building." The book contains three major themes: ethnic boundaries and nation-building in modern China, non-Han perspectives and the modern evolution of Chinese Islam. The significance of this collection of papers is its gathering of the latest research results in related fields, providing both a macro and specific analysis of the issues surrounding nation-building and the boundaries and identities of minority nationalities. Each article in this collection concentrates on the changes that occurred in the modern Chinese borderlands and how they became the "contemporary." It is a study of the formation process, a marginal study. It deeply observes and dissects the "margin" where change occurs- the time (from the end of the Qing Dynasty to the first half of the 20th century), space (Chinese borderlands), and people (the Miao, the Western Fans, the Hui, the indigenous ethnic groups, and the minority nationalities, etc.) during the transition from imperial China to modern China. The authors explore the micro-social interactions that occur when various groups of people come into contact, as well as their emotions, intentions, and actions. With this, we should have a deeper understanding, appreciation, and reflection on the history and contemporary significance of "how the past shapes the present."
