"Comeback, comeback to me." These were the words that XiXi whispered in Robbies ear before he was arrested, and they were the words he never stopped saying even after his release and before the outbreak of war. The postcard he clutched to his chest when Robbie passed away depicted a beautiful house with a white wall and blue windowsills by the blue sea, with a vibrant red roof. That was the place where he had hoped to live with XiXi, but he would never have the chance. The carefree young man who once walked along the oak-lined path, the brilliant student who ranked first in his grade and received scholarships, the determined young man who was confident in his medical skills, all these selves had disappeared. He should have had a bright future, but a lie changed his life trajectory.
I almost skipped all the texts about Briony because I found it difficult to keep reading. Whether it was the portrayal in the drama or the text itself, I detested this character. I loathed the so-called script she wrote, "Atonement of Arabella," her ambition to become a novelist, her boundless imagination, and unbounded thinking. Why couldnt a 13-year-old child be innocent, kind, lively, and enthusiastic in her own way? Was her sullen personality a reflection of her mother or the reflection of an adults personality imposed on her?
Nevertheless, Brionys lie was like a sharp knife that severed Robbies future and shattered the fragments of old, beautiful memories, as if they scattered into the sky and could never be pieced together. Perhaps, in that era, Robbies future would have been shattered by the war, and he and XiXi would have been inevitably separated. However, that lie accelerated the arrival of this ending, three and a half years ahead of schedule. Yet I prefer to believe that, without the three and a half years of imprisonment, Robbie would have joined the war as a volunteer in college, fighting for the future of his country, for the peace of humanity. He would have never joined the war as a prisoner, trying to clear himself of unfounded accusations. Therefore, Briony cannot be forgiven.
Finally, Brionys remorse made me feel nauseous. In the book, she wrote, "The lovers survive and flourish. And so do I. Just as I am the witness to the joys of their love, I am also the witness to their pain. I see them together, happy, and content, and I know we shall meet again, and I know it will be in heaven." That person who grew up viewing other peoples lives from a Gods perspective repented in her old age. However, she still thought of herself as a God who could rewrite someone elses destroyed life. Or, perhaps, as mentioned in the book, judgment day is far away. The truth at the beginning no longer mattered, because the free-spirited life that should have been could never return.
