Sometimes life feels like a huge stone that can crush people deep into the soil without them even knowing it. Those who are crushed may either sink and disappear in silence, or constantly seek opportunities to find a small gap in the stone, lift their head up, and call for the arrival of spring. Taiwanese writer Lin Kailun clearly belongs to the latter group. Born in 1986 in Taiwan, Lin Kailun is the author of "The Morning Fish Market and the Late Night Desk". He has won many awards, such as the Lin Rong San Literature Award, the Times Literature Award, the Taipei Literature Award, and the Taichung Literature Award.
Before he became a writer, Lin Kailun worked as a fishmonger. "The Morning Fish Market and the Late Night Desk" is his debut work. In this non-fiction book, he boldly analyzes himself, his family, and life. Although he is the third generation of fishmongers, being a fishmonger was never Lin Kailuns dream. When he was a child, his family was well-off. His grandfather sold fish and his parents ran several successful tea shops. He himself was often praised for being smart and had many dreams - to become an astronaut, a mayor, a national sprinter, or even to inherit his fathers bubble tea shop. However, he never thought about becoming a fishmonger. If everything had continued to go smoothly, Lin Kailun would have likely achieved his dreams step by step. However, life took a turn - his father became addicted to gambling and couldnt stop. First, his parents divorced and the tea shops closed down. Then, his grandfather and the entire family were tied up with huge debts. Without the tea shops, Lin Kailuns father had to come back and sell fish with his grandfather, but the fish didnt sell well and his gambling habits still continued. At a young age, Lin Kailun had to share the financial responsibilities of the family and help sell fish. While others were reading books and taking breaks from school, he was "selling fish as his official job and taking breaks to study". Before, his grandfather and father used to say "dont sell fish in the future, study well", but now his father says "why study so hard when youre just going to sell fish". Later, he was forced to give up his graduate studies, stop reading, and even "forgot the dreams he once had".
However, Lin Kailuns efforts did not wake up his father, who continued to ride on the road of gambling. The year Lin Kailun turned thirty, his second child was born. On the day his child was born, his father was still asking him for money to gamble. This time, Lin Kailun decided to leave. After paying off a portion of his fathers debts, Lin Kailun "was willing to have nothing" and start a new life - he wanted to find sunshine and hope in the mud and cracks of life for his wife and children, and for himself. In 2019, he started writing, and in 2020 he won various literary awards. In "The Morning Fish Market and the Late Night Desk", Lin Kailun writes about the brightly lit fish market in the morning, the strong and independent female fishmonger AEJie, and loyal old customers like Mr. Luoti who treated him like a grandson. In the transactions of buying and selling, the flow of human nature and emotions was abundant.
Lin Kailun said, "Without going through the hardships of life, without honing the perspective and emotions of observing people in the fish market, I might not be able to write the works I have today. If I hadnt become a fishmonger, I couldnt have become a writer." Being able to look up at spring in the gap is sometimes an accomplishment in itself.
