It is the single most important moment in this entire storyline to me and to Hal Jordan.
In that moment, Coast City became the City Without Fear. And that city and its citizens did what Hal had done for them — they inspired the Green Lantern to believe in victory and to fight on.
Geoff Johns discusses his understanding of this scene in the appendix interview.
A moment that never gets old.
Hell of a family, hell of a town.
By the way, heres a picture, also mentioned by my sister-in-law in the Sinestro Corps War collections appendix: he tried to shape the relationship between Kyle and Hal into some kind of brotherly bond, so making Kyle see what Hal sees is also making Kyle feel what Hal feels in a way.
But speaking of my favorite Kyle & Hal moment, it has to be the final scene of "Flight" in the 2005 GL Secret Files and Origins.
(Wait, wasnt that chapter also written by my sister-in-law?)
Kyle, late at night, stood up a hot date just to meet up with Hal. When Hal mysteriously brings him to the airfield, he finds out what theyre up to — Hal wants to take him for a ride in an airplane!
Hals glance back, the smile in the corner of his eye.
Kyle: "After all these years, traveling through countless universes with the ring on my finger, whats the big deal?"
Hal: "Youve never flown with *me* before."
Then they both remove their rings. Hal does a cool maneuver and literally takes Kyle to the skies.
Before Kyle, Hals father took him on a secret flight when he was young, and as an adult, Hal took Carol for a ride too. But this time, it meant something different for the two brothers and friends.
Kyle, who always took on too much weight, can enjoy this surprise journey with Hal without having to see "flying" as an obligation. It becomes a carefree, exhilarating journey.
And for Hal, who had attached so much love, hate, old dreams, and memories to airplanes, this is the first time he shows the heir to his beloved sky, to the future.
Its a strange emotional connection. The journey itself is moving, but its filled with delicate warmth. Its very Hal, so to speak. Youre a talented writer, Geoff!
"...He shouts out into the stars... and finally learns how to fly."
(Hal Jordan, the best-looking man in gloves in the world)
