It is a beautifully written book with poetic language and intriguing plot. It is hard not to feel for Kya, watching her growing up from a little girl to a woman, being abandoned one by one by all of her family and her first love. Her loneliness is suffocating when she learns that Chase Andrews is marrying another girl. Its not only her family and lovers who abandoned her but the whole discriminative society.
So it was heartwarming at the same time to see how a few people extended their kindness to the marsh girl, the Jumpins family, her lawyer Tom Milton, and the editor Robert Foster. The jury overcomes the prejudice against the marsh girl and finds her guilty, but the reconciliation is still a long way to go. She still refused to blend into the society in town but she opened her heart to trust Tate, who once abandoned her.
The whole story is a well-balanced blend of beautiful nature, artistic language, and a thought-provoking discussion about discrimination, isolation, and reconciliation. The only downside is that it feels rushed towards the end. That Kya and Tate get back together is a little abrupt. Perhaps it deserves a longer story to explain how Kya decided to trust Tate again.
