During middle school and high school, I used to enjoy reading "sophisticated" articles, by which I mean articles that were filled with fancy vocabulary and complex sentences that were difficult to understand and replicate. The sense of distance these articles provided was fascinating, and I thought that was what literature was all about.
But as I grew older, I realized that this so-called "sophistication" paled in comparison to the beauty of wildflowers in the countryside, the everyday activities of cooking and cleaning, and the warmth of a home kitchen. The articles I read gradually became more grounded.
Emotional resonance, storytelling, and shared experiences are what truly make literature valuable. Discovering beauty in the mundane, comforting wounded souls, and finding a place of serenity amidst the chaos of city life - that is what literature is all about.
"Silence and Freedom," which includes ten works nominated for the Lu Xun Literary Prize by writers like Sun Pin and Luo Weizhang, is a collection of five short stories and five novellas. Literary creation is often an expression of ones own experiences and emotions, sharing what one has seen, heard, and learned in order to inspire others, express oneself, or seek resonance. Winning an award is a form of recognition, but excellent works that go unrecognized should not gather dust. I am grateful for this collection, which gives these great works a wider audience and touches the hearts of more people.
Among these works, "Han Yus Free and Easy" left a deep impression on me. Many people have the impression that the Northeastern dialect is composed of phrases like "what are you looking at?" or "what do you want?" or "hey there!" But when I read this short story, I felt as if I was sitting by a Northeastern Kang bed, cracking sunflower seeds and listening to a real-life story being told by the person in front of me. Her suffering, pain, helplessness, inner thoughts, the people around her - everything, including her tone and expressions, was truly felt. The protagonist of the story, because of her illness, has to deal with changes in her surroundings and the people around her, including her straightforward ex-boyfriend, her strong and silent mother who suddenly passes away, and her father whom she disparages for being out of touch.
This book is like a small river in my hometown, its slow and steady flow bringing familiarity and comfort, the loud voices of neighbors on the left, the wafting smells of delicious food from the right, a gentle but constant stream.
