The story is about a famous detective, Hercule Poirot, travelling on a luxury train from Istanbul to London. Along the way, he encounters a group of passengers of diverse backgrounds. One of whom is an American businessman named Ratchett who is found dead in his cabin one morning while the train is stranded by a snowdrift. Poirot is asked to investigate the case and discovers that Ratchett was a criminal behind a previous case involving the kidnapping and murder of a young girl named Daisy Armstrong. The case is further complicated by the fact that there are twelve suspects, each with a possible motive and alibi. After a thorough investigation, Poirot discovers that every passenger was connected to the Armstrong family and concludes that they conspired together to murder Ratchett for revenge. However, in the end, he and the director of the railway company eventually decide not to report the discovery to authorities. Though it is the first suspense novel I have read, I consider it a masterpiece of plot and suspense with a clever and original solution that challenges the readers expectations. I personally consider it a miracle that, by only describing what happened on the train, the author was able to quickly create such an immersive experience of tension and claustrophobia, as well as constructing a diverse cast of characters, each with their own distinct personality and secrets. The book also explores themes such as justice, revenge, loyalty, and deception, raising questions about the nature of the murder and the role of the law and ethics.
