A lifelong story always has its charm, especially told in a gentle tone. It may be rather swift and not too special, but what did we expect?

Edith, who was a gentle young lady, using her whole life to escape, from nowhere, to nowhere. Finally, she was trapped by herself, because that was the only person that can be trusted. On the lined face, on which mouth murmurs Willy and Gracie, I can see no sign of a happy young girl like young Gracie long ago.

Really touching: “Bill, if we never have anything else, we will have had this week. Does that sound like a girlish thing to say?”

There may be a similarity between Edith and Gollum, who are both retreating from the outside world to themselves after fails. In the last few chapters, Edith had become a person with no defend, but only to herself. “What will I do without him?”

At the end of Stoners life, he had been taking a kind of trip traveling through time, which is considered by me the most touching part of this novel.

There are too many things that cant be clearly spoken out, and there are too many emotions that can only be swallowed by your own. I have counted, there are 29 numbing this novel.

“He saw Edith as she had been that first evening they had met at old Claremonts house -- the blue gown and the slender fingers and the fair, delicate face that smiled softly, the pale eyes that looked eagerly upon each moment as if it were a sweet surprise. Your mother... he said. She was not always... She was not always as she had been; and he thought now that he could perceive beneath the woman she had become the girl that she had been; he thought that he had always perceived it.”

“He heard the small laughter echo in the distance. Of course,” he said and looked upon the present face of that child. “Of course,” he said again, “you were always there.”
