Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) was a renowned Soviet writer. His autobiographical trilogy, of which Childhood is the first part, captures the vivid details of his life from the ages of three to ten years old. The story describes the life of Alyosha Peshkov, who loses his father at the age of three and is brought up by his mother and grandmother at his grandfather's house. His grandfather is a small dye factory owner who is on the verge of bankruptcy. He is a violent, greedy, selfish and moody person, and both Alyosha's uncles, Mikhail and Yakov, are crude and selfish merchants who even influence the following generations with their negative attitude. The family home is full of hate and animosity, and the adults are consumed by hatred that even takes hold of the children.
