Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, born on 18 July 1918, was an influential South African politician. He made history by becoming the first democratically elected President of South Africa, serving from 1994 to 1999. However, his journey to presidency was not an easy one.
Before entering politics, Mandela was a fierce advocate against apartheid, a system of segregation and discrimination. He played a crucial role as the leader and co-founder of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962, he was arrested and found guilty of sabotage and other charges, resulting in a life imprisonment sentence.
For 27 years, Mandela endured hardships, including spending a significant portion of his sentence on Robben Island. However, on 11 February 1990, he finally gained his freedom when he was released from prison. Following his release, Mandela took charge and led his political party in negotiations that successfully led to the establishment of democracy in 1994.
As President, Mandela prioritized reconciliation and aimed to heal the deep divisions caused by apartheid. He implemented policies focused on addressing poverty and inequality in South Africa. Mandela's leadership not only shattered racial barriers but also brought about positive change for his country by promoting unity and addressing socio-economic issues.
